The Tainos called them Tanama! Central Texas is critical to Monarch Butterfly survival. These important pollinators fly through our region in the fall and spring, to/from their breeding grounds (North) and winter home (Mexico). Unfortunately, thanks to urban growth, the Monarchs are finding less of what they need to survive. Humanity has forgotten how to live in harmony with Nature. And because of that, Nature is changing -- We all see it. We are all affected. Enjoy this free workshop and learn one way you can help -- from your very own backyard!
This workshop will:
- teach you about Monarch ecology and what you can do to help them thrive, even from your own backyard! It will bring awareness to the importance of the ecological circle connecting the Earth and your life.
- give opportunity for enlightening, personal discovery through hands-on creative art. How is the Earth's decline affecting your life? Affecting society? What can you do - today - to bring positive impact?
The workshop will culminate in a Taino Areyto (ceremonial dance). We will celebrate together all we have discovered, and launch on a road to healing engagement with the Earth.
This interactive workshop will take place at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, 701 Tillery Street, Austin TX 78702. Bring your beach chairs and water.

This VERY JOYFUL Taino Areyto you see on this video below was UNREHEARSED. During the Areyto, Tekina-eiru was VERY SURPRISED when the students answered back her song in perfect call-and-response -- in Taino -- without having ever heard the song or language before. It was a wonderful experience for the students -- and for Tekina-eiru as well!

ABSTRACT: When Nature Sings - for the Caregiver
Did you know that anyone who helps others overcome physical, emotional, mental, or
spiritual problems is a healer? Everyone from licensed professionals to family caregivers
will be called to this role at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, people who devote
much of their energy to serving others often begin to feel worn down by a growing sense
of mental and physical exhaustion, compassion fatigue or burnout.
A powerful way for caregivers to renew themselves is to develop a closer connection with nature. This interactive workshop combines inspirational anecdotes based in Taino spirituality, original photography and live Taino flute music to expose the timeless wisdom that nature transmits through the world around us. Uplifting participation in music-making and meaningful discussion and teaches practices that can be used to refresh your spirit on a regular basis.
